Unban Coolies

COOLIES by Yin & Chris Soentpiet

Since its release, COOLIES has been embraced by educators and families alike, earning the Parents’ Choice Gold Award in 2001 as the Best Book of the Year. The narrative follows two young brothers from a Cantonese village to the American West, where they join thousands of other migrants in building the nation’s railroads. This story represents the history of millions of Americans and highlights the significant contributions of Chinese immigrants to our nation’s development.

However, despite its educational value, COOLIES was banned in a school district in Florida, reflecting a broader issue of exclusion within educational materials. Such bans not only withhold a crucial part of our diverse cultural heritage but also undermine efforts to celebrate and understand the full scope of the American experience.

This is not just about reinstating a book; it’s about honoring the Asian-American experience as an integral part of American history. The resilience and determination of characters Shek and Little Wong offer profound lessons for all readers, not just those of Asian descent.

Please support this petition to reinstate COOLIES in classrooms and libraries across the country, ensuring that the contributions of Asian-American immigrants are recognized and appreciated.
